STEP 17

Once you are happy with the setting, focus on the figure. Strengthen the shadows using a dark warm grey and refine the features of the face. Add details to the guitar. Finally, add bloodstains and spatters around the vampire’s mouth and clothing and on the guitar.

THE ENCHANTED

Fantasy films are often a rich source of inspiration, and this drawing pays homage to characters created by director Guillermo del Toro. I didn’t want to draw an exact re-creation of the characters I have seen, so I purposely relied solely on my memory rather than looking at clips. This makes sure that there are some differences between his faun and fairies and the ones in this exercise.

I started by creating some rough thumbnail sketches exploring variations on a theme. In Figure 1, I included a magic symbol behind the faun, which framed the subject. Initially I liked this approach, but then I thought it was too contrived, so I placed the faun and the fairy in an archway covered in ivy (Figure 2). I preferred the uncluttered layout and decided to use this arrangement.
